Abstract

The Additive manufacturing has evolved from a rapid prototyping tool into a transformative production technology capable of fabricating complex engineering structures with unprecedented geometric freedom. Unlike conventional subtractive and formative manufacturing processes, additive manufacturing enables layer-by-layer material deposition driven directly by digital models, allowing the realization of intricate internal architectures, functionally graded materials, and customized structural components. This review examines emerging trends in additive manufacturing technologies with a specific focus on their application to complex engineering structures across aerospace, automotive, biomedical, and civil engineering domains. Advances in process technologies, material systems, multi-scale design strategies, and computational control are critically analyzed. The paper further explores key engineering challenges related to mechanical performance, process reliability, scalability, and qualification standards. Particular emphasis is placed on the interaction between material behavior, process parameters, and structural integrity. The review concludes by identifying future research directions necessary for transitioning additive manufacturing from specialized applications to mainstream structural engineering practice.
